O bjective: To verify the association between health conditions and sociodemographic aspects with polypharmacy in older adults people covered by a Family Health Unit. Method: Cross-sectional observational study carried out in a Family Health Unit in Manhuaçu-MG. Socioeconomic and demographic profile, health conditions and life habits were characterized. The number of medications used was verified, considering polypharmacy as the use of 5 or more medications. Pearson's chi -square test was performed, adopting a significance level of p <0.05 and 95% CI for all analyses. Results: Of the 229 seniors selected, the prevalence of polypharmacy was 43.2%. Variables associated with polypharmacy were age over 80 years, presence of hospitalization in the last year, presence of chronic disease, absence of alcoholic habits and absence of physical activity. Conclusion: The findings demonstrate that the aging process associated with negative health conditions contributes to the excessive use of medication in this population group. The findings corroborate the need for training health professionals in managing the health conditions of the older adults, in addition to encouraging active aging in the prevention of morbidities in this age group.
